The Tinenca de benifassà nature park stretches across the upper headwaters of the Rivers Senia and Tastavins, which cut through the final bastions of the Iberian System in the district of El baix Maestrat in Castellón (The Valencian Community). The picturesque villages of Castell de cabres, and bel constitute the human heartlands of this rugged landscape. Named alter the Cistercian monastery of santa Maria de Benifassà, these lands, one traditionally controlled by the abbot, are now one of the most beautiful natural park in the Region of Valencia. The Tinença de Benifassá nature park and the adjoining lands of the neighbouring district, Els Ports, are of such environmental and cultural value that they were officially declared a protected zone in 2006. Covering 25,814 hectares across the municipalities of Castell de Cabres, La Pobla de Benifassá and Rossell, in the El Baix Maestrat district, and the municipality of Vallibona, in the Els Ports district, the nature park thus occupies an area greater than what was strictly the former district of La Tinença de Benifassá. Among this natural grandeur, certain tracts of forest stand out: La Tenalla and El Mas del Peraire in Los Puertos de Beceite, Masia Roure in the very heart of the park; and the wooden slopes of the Font del Teix, Sant Doménech or Masia Ferreres mountains, which feed the river Cervol. Along with the network of brooks and streams, these form an impressive landscape that will leave visitors awestruck.
La Pobla de Benifassá, is the district’s main town, and still bears testimony to life in times gone by, with its stone houses built facing the sun and its narrow streets leading up to the 13 century church, whose side Entrance is Romanesque and whose slim dell tower crowns the town. Located in the northeast of La Tinenca at an altitude of some 1,000m, Fredes is the most northerly town in the whole of the Region of Valencia. It is set in an extraordinary landscape of leafy woodland and boasts a church dedicated to saints Abdon and Senen. At El Bellestar, the houses nestle among peaceful narrow streets and the is an interesting 13 century church. In Coratxá stands the Romanesque church of San Jaime, with its portico and broad dell tower. Below the clock a stone sculpture of a knight is hidden thought by some to be a Templar, and next to the cemetery lie stone carved ancient monograms of christ. Named after the forests of boxwood that used to provide the timber for tools and cutlery, the quiet village of El Boixar.
The runs between Fredes and the Ulldecona reservoir, by way of the spectacular Portell del Infern (Gateway to Hell). This stretch boasts unusual scenery and the most southerly beech woods in the whole of Europe. A particularly great beech wood is the Faig Pare, which is dotted with relics of ancient man in the form of cave paintings. For this reason, the Valencian Board of Culture has responded favourably fo the Centro Excursions in Valencia hiking centre’s request for this historical mountain trail to be officially declared a Site of Cultural lnterest.
Accessing La Tínença from the east, visitors will be greeted by the Ulldecona reservoir and its transparent green waters - as green as the surrounding píne — where trout can be fished. In the Abric dels rossegadors cave, towards the southern end of the reservoir, are the traces of mankind’s first settlement in this rugged landscape. This protected cave contains rock art depicting scenesof fishing and hunting. The reservoir’s surrounding area is the perfect setting for active tourism, with countless opportunities to enjoy walking, mountain biking, climbing and many other adventure sports.

Ploughing the waters between Cofrentes and Cortes de Pallás, the boat slowly glides through the emeralds waters of the dammed Júcar, cleving throgh the reflections of the towering ochre and black bluffs carved by the sculpting hand of the river befote continuing its smooth way hmong gentler landscapes. The deep waters of the Júcar form a route alost 30 kilometres long, offering spectacular views of natureand life in a mountain range shaped over the centurias. Every day, boats from the Los Cañones del Júcar and Sinoa companies cruise the length of this, the Region of Valencian only river route.
As the boat sails towards the Júcar canyon, visitors can contemplate the breathtaking scenery that unfolds below the ever-watchful Cortes de Palla outcrop. This navegable reservoir was inaugurated in 1983 to store the waters of the river Júcar, and one of its striking features is that it berely varies in water level, since the water is retained for producing hydroelectric energy. This has enabled people to sail on the reservoir, with the appropriate safety precautions and respect for the environment as stipulated by the river Júcar.
Along the whole length of the route, between the sheer cliffs and from the small baches forme don the banks of the reservoir, game fishing is a popular pastime thanks to a supervised population of black bass. This reservoir is considered to be one of the best in the whole of Spain for fishing because of its abundant population of dace, which feed the pike and Black bass stocks.
At the confluence of the rivers Júcar and Cabriel stands Cofrentes, a town that sprang up at the feet of a mediaeval castle built on the remains of another castle originally constructed by the Moors. The town’s Arab influence is also visible in the intricate layout of its streets. Forever surrounded by water, the town has always lived by water and for water, as evidenced by its rivers, market gardens, salt flats, waterfalls and, of course.

Entombed beneath the ashes of Mount Vesuvius on 24th 79 AD, Pompeii is now being brought back to life and recovering its shape in the form of Ponipeya (Pompeii heneath Pompeii), an unusual exhibition currently showing at the Alicante Archaeology Museum until 18 February. The exhibition’s title alludes to a lesser known Pompeii, discovered beneath the streets and houses, whose evolution led to the beautiful buried City new preserved for eternity and which was described in the narratives of Pliny the Younger. The show takes visitors back to the city of Pompeii and to the home of Ariadna, who was disinterred in the 19th century and whose remains are now on display. The exhibition then moves on to research activities carried out by archaeologists from the Municipal Archaeology Service of Valencia and from the Marq, presenting results of the excavations in an educational format. Visitors are then taken back to the lands of Valencia, as the exhibition reveals the region’s links with Pompeii and the Italian region of Campania, with a particular focus on the first two centuries BC.
This exhibition explores a lasser known Pompeii, the early discovered beneath the streets and houses and whose evolution led to the beautiful buried city now preserved for eternity.
Through the use of Large-scale illustrations, the exhibition shows visitors the city’s shape and surrounding land, explaining Pompeii´s role within the Roman Empire by way of large Roman map copied in the Middle Ages. Focus then switches to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD and its aftermath, with plaster-cast reproductions of a dog and a man who both perished as a result. The ordeal suffered by the inhabitants is vividly portrayed and brought home by the screening of a documentary on the most recent major eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which took place in 1944. Information en the excavations, which resurrected Pompeii from beneath stone and ashes, is also provided on site. Then, before moving on to the house of Ariadna, visitors will see five notable and original murals from the city one of Pompeii’s great legacies to universal art.
The House of Ariadna
The degli capitelli colorati, thus named after the many colours on the capitals of the peristyle, was one of the grandest and most beautiful houses in Pompeii. An audiovisual display of infographic images depicts the current structure of the house, which boasts a surface area of 1,800 meters, and some reconstructed views of its inside. The story of its discovery and its rich decorations are dealt with by way of reproductions of its paintings or of 19th century images such as watercolours. There are also some original materials on display, including the beautiful capital that graced one of the entrances to the house.
The excavations
This area looks at the results of the activities carried out since 2004, which have shed much light on the evolution of this great dwelling, and includes part of the archaeological material recovered. Most notable is the section of a great mural painting restored by the Archaeological Museum of Alicante, which gives visitors an idea of the type of decor that would have axisted in the house in its final years, and a cube-shaped installation suggested by an archaeological sounding, in which several screens show images of the excavation process, research into the materials, and the restoration work.
Campania and the Lands
Spain has received many products, ideas and people from the Italian Country of which Pompeii formed part. This exhibition focuses en Valentia etLucentum (the Roman name for present-day El Tossal de Manises, Alicante) and shows prime examples of materials produced in Campania and found in the Country of Valencia, such as tableware, kitchen ceramics and amphorae used to transport wine. A number of Iberian recipients give an idea of the cultural environment surrounding these products, which successfully illustrate the phenomenon of Romanisation. Similarly, there are two axamples of mural paintings from the Valentia imperial age which reflect the Pompeii paintings that visitors will have seen earlier in the exhibition. Finally, evidence is also provided of people coming over from Italy in the shape of a Valentia tomb in which the burial ritual and funerary objects convey the Italien origin of the deceased, who was one of the early colonisers of the city of Lucentum founded in 138 BC, and who died there under the inscription Publio Fulvio Asclas. Publio Fulvio is the only native of Pompeii in the whole of Spain whose existence has been confirmed and who is known by name. At the very and of the hall, opposite the plaster casts at the start of the exhibition, are the unfortunate souls who lost their lives to Mount Vesuvius, and whose form remains imprinted in the ashas. It is these people who give meaning to the search for historical knowledge narreted here in the Archaeological Museum of Alicante.

The city is synonymous with fun in summer and also in winter, as it boats all of the necessary ingredients to whet the appetite of any visitor. This is nothing unusual in Benidor, where regardless of whether it’s december, february, may or agust, the beach is always ready, the sun shines on the horizon and the water is clean and warm. The Benidorm skyline emerges each morning framed between Tossal de la Cala at one end and the Sierra Helada mountains at the other. In the middle, the white and blue fortress of the Castle and the sandy Mal Pas separate the Levante and Poniente beaches; the former more urban and cosmopolitan, the latter much less crowded. Benidorm has grown in step with its coastlines and even though it still boasts intimate and secluded coves, Levante and Poniente are its beaches par excellence: broad swathes of white sands with all imaginable kinds of entertainment and fun. Bathed by the warm Mediterranean, Benidorm‘s beaches are also places to enjoy peace and quiet, sports, relaxation, sunshine and the sea during the winter months. Who says that beaches are just for summer, in a city of warm winters and endless sands, where the fun-loving Levant spirif infuses alI?
Benidorm beach is also a haven for more peaceful souls who prefer to wander at the water’s edge, leaving footprints that the sea will always wash away, or for those who visit the “library beaches” to read the papers or the latest publishing sensation.
Benidorm is synonymous with fun in summer and also in winter, being as it is a privileged city that boasts all of the necessary ingredients to whet the appetite of any visitor, no matter what the time of year.
